"smallpox vaccine should never be used therapeutically:"

complications occurred, especially in patients with underlying diseases or recipients of therapy impaired immune systems or in persons who had not been vaccinated for many years;

In May 1990, at the World Health Assembly, the World Health Organization declared a smallpox free world;

2-pronged vaccine needle used.

Warnings
intervals of about 2 days to 2 weeks between live virus vaccines should always be avoided:

in past, recommendations of intervals of one month between live virus vaccines;

simultaneous live virus vaccines offer advantages: threat of existing exposure, individual inaccessible for further vaccinations; or when 1-month interval would disrupt vaccination programs; these are valid reasons for simultaneous administration of poliovirus, measles, smallpox and yellow fever vaccines, provided no contraindication for the individual vaccines; if the theoretically desirable 1-month interval not feasible, vaccines should be given on the same day at different sites;

Dryvax not used after expiration date regardless of dry or reconstituted form;

In the 2-part process, if needle touches skin after dropping vaccine on injection site, do not re-dip needle into vaccine;
before disposal, vaccine vial, stopper, needle burned, boiled or autoclaved

Contraindications
infants failing to thrive;
individuals with eczema, other skin conditions, wounds, burns; siblings or household contacts of these individuals;

persons receiving x-ray, ACTH, steroids, immunosuppressive drugs;
people with gamma globulin synthesis disorders;
people with leukemia, lymphomas, malignancies affecting bone marrow or lymphatic systems;
pregnant women
prevention or treatment of recurrent herpes, warts, or any other diseases.

Precautions
only 2 or 3 needle punctures recommended for primary vaccination; 15 for revaccination;
